National Interests and Transnational Governance: Russia’s Changing Environmental Policy

The project examines how the environmental policies and practices of Russian Federation have been affected by transnational initiatives in climate change, sustainable forestry, and oil and gas extraction.  The project offers a unique investigation of the impact of transnational governance at both the national and subnational levels. Research answers such questions as:  Why are some transnational environmental governance initiatives effective and others fail?  Which factors induce states and other actors to constrain themselves by committing to transnational agreements and how does participation change their institutional and normative commitments?
