Public Discussion in the Muslim Community of Russia and Ukraine and the Perspectives for Defense of Muslim Women’s Rights

Joint project with the Institute for Humanities and Political Studies (Moscow).

The basic goal of the project is the study of how the current public discussion within the Russian and Ukrainian Muslim communities addresses gender issues and affects the status and rights of women. The project is also aiming at examination of what kind of opportunities for women activism and for the defense of women rights within the Muslim community this discussion provides for. The research methods include examination of the Muslim printed and electronic media in Russia and Ukraine in Russian and Turkic languages for analyzing the gender dimension of the Islamic mainstream ideologies. Additionally, in-depth problem-oriented interviews with Muslim community leaders as well as biographical interviews with role model women activists are envisaged.
