Informing Environmental Decision-Making: Environmental Impact Assessment in Russia and the United States

Joint project with the St. Petersburg Society of Naturaliststhe NGO “Green World” (St. Petersburg)the Volgograd State Pedagogical Universitythe Ramapo College of New Jersey.

Exchange project between Russian NGOs and academics, and the US counterparts from the Ramapo College of New Jersey. The aims of the project were: to establish partnerships between NGOs and selected institutions of higher education for the purpose of training in the areas of public participation in environmental impact assessment; to promote a shared understanding of comparative assessment policy and practice between the United States and Russia involving an opportunity to exchange mutual ideas on how to improve the impact assessment process; to conduct a comparative sociological analysis of the process of environmental impact assessment in Russia and the USA. A comparative sociological analysis of case studies in Russia (St. Petersburg, Petrozavodsk, Pestovo) and in the USA (New York – New Jersey) was conducted. As a result of the research a book was published in both Russian and English.
