Guest research

Guest research at the Centre for Independent Social Research assumes independent research on one’s own project on the basis of CISR. Russian and foreign students, graduate students, and young scholars using qualitative methods in their work and engaged in sociological/anthropological empirical research thematically close to the main directions of CISR are expected. Guest research does not presuppose job placement at the Centre. During the course of a guest research stay, CISR provides the following resources:

  • A working space, wireless internet, the opportunity to use office equipment and a room for conducting interviews (8,000 rubles/month)
  • Access to the library of CISR and assistance in getting access to other libraries and archives of St. Petersburg
  • Consultations with CISR researchers engaged with relevant themes (i.e. applicants can contact directly those researchers with similar academic interests)
  • Contacts with institutes of sociology in St. Petersburg, other cities of Russia and abroad
  • The opportunity to participate in CISR seminars and organize one’s own seminars

It is possible to begin work at any time convenient for the researcher. The guest research visit can also be of any duration. No official documents are required from the guest researcher. CISR can offer foreign researchers an invitation for a short-term Russian visa. The Centre does not provide grants for conducting research, nor does it finance travel or living expenses in Petersburg. We ask you to apply to other sources for financing. In addition, CISR does not help find living accommodation in Petersburg.  By preliminary agreement it is possible to rent CISR’s guest room (900 rubles/day, 22,000 rubles (250Euro) /month) for short-term stays (up to 3 months). Upon arrival the researcher fills out a guest card. A guest research visit can take the form of practical training under the condition that the guest needs scientific guidance. In that case the guest researcher independently reaches an agreement with the CISR researcher studying relevant projects. The form of collaboration (scientific guidance, temporary inclusion in a CISR project and so on) is discussed individually between the guest researcher and the researcher of the Centre. CISR does not provide certificates for practical training, although official forms needed by the guest may be signed. If you are interested in the possibility of a guest research visit at CISR, we ask you to send us ( the following information at least a month before your arrival:
